Everything I know about business I learned from Monopoly

October 26th, 2010

I first learn about the word Monopoly from the board game and not by its economic definition of the one’s superior control over a market.

What came into mind with the single word ‘Monopoly‘?

Parker Brothers is the publisher of Monopoly board game and owns it as a registered trademark. Hasbro is Parker Brothers parent company, hence any use of Monopoly’s logo and name has to be licensed by Hasbro.

Including the book Everything I Know About Business I Learned from Monopoly.

Title of this books sounds just like a business book, with readers expecting business strategies by examples from a game of Monopoly.
In reality, it’s not.

This book has 29 chapters, covering topics of the rules of the Monopoly board game, especially on how to win it.

The only thing ‘business’ in it are the quotes from famous people, slipped into pages where the chapter is related to such famous quotes.

There are a few interesting topics though, where it covers the statistics of landing on specific coloured properties, what chances of getting numbers from the roll of dice and how to make shortages of houses to win the game.

I found some reviews particularly accurate from my point of view, and to spare more comments from me, here’s a quote from one of the book’s reviewer post in Amazon:

This book lacked a lot of focus in what it wanted to accomplish. Was it trying to give tips on how to win at Monopoly or trying to show how the game teaches lessons to be applied to real life? In both cases, it came up lacking. More… Marcus Helms

Most of the time the author is just trying to tell the reader how to win a Monopoly game.

Sadly, that wasn’t what the title of the book meant to be.
Probably that was also why I got this book from a book fair with discounted price. 🙂

      @RaveDev
I got it from Bookfest Malaysia 2010, organized by Popular bookstore.
I guess you could get it from Popular store as well, or might just flip through for your Monopoly tips. 🙂

Even if it is a book that teaches me to become a better monopoly player I will buy it. I love Monopoly, and will be happy to go on a duel with anyone who is game on it!

Is that your monopoly set? How come the money is so new one? 🙂
