Internet Connection Problem?

December 3rd, 2008

Having problem with your internet connection in Malaysia is very common, especially if you’re using “shemix”. (One radio DJ does pronounce it like that!)

I have had multiple times of disconnection encounters with my internet connection with period ranging from a few minutes, to a few hours or even days!

How do you solve your connection problem?

Well, I hope the following helps as that’s what I do:

1) Do a ‘ping’ to the domain or URL you like to access. The example below is performing a connection test with google.com.

Skills Level : Low (still have basic computer skills in knowing network cable is plugged in)

Type this at command prompt : ping google.com

If you can see the reply from that command as in  “Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.”, then it’s working. The final statistics summary of (0% loss) also shows that the connectivity is extremely good.

Replace the google.com with the website you want to test the connection with.

2) Try a few servers eg google.com, yahoo.com, msn.com among others to ensure it is really your connection problem and not that the server you’re trying to connect is down or facing technical difficulties.

3) If you’ve did a ping and you still think it’s slow, try this:

Type this at command prompt : ping google.com -t

The minus t means it should not stop at four replies but continue the test until you ask it to stop. Press Control+C to stop it and check the statistics.

Something like this means the connectivity is real bad.

Notice from the screenshot my first ping only receive one reply out of the four – 75% loss. When I run another ping with minus t, then I’m able to see that the connection is not stable.

You do not have much choice in this case. It could be the server is really busy or your internet provider really sucks.

4) If you are not giving up and would like to continue trying, try disconnecting your internet connection and redial.

Skills Level : Medium (Requires some understanding of computer technicality)

Sometimes the server you get connected to your broadband are so loaded that you can’t get anymore bandwidth from it.  Disconnecting from it and getting another new ip (of different network segment helps). Eg. if your current Internet IP (your router IP if you are connected to internet via router) is something like 128.xx.xx.xx, try redial until you get 118.xx.xx.xx or 60.xx.xx.xx or something else.

I’ve had problem connecting to US servers and when I managed to change my IP, it works!

5) If all of the above fails, or you even fail to get an IP from your internet provider, then there is not much you can do unless to pick up the phone and dial for customer service assistance.

Skills Level : None

Tell the Customer Service Assistant that you’re having a problem with your internet connection. If you’re using Streamyx, ‘shemix’, most likely they will ask you if you’re using a router, using a splitter and try to connect without using the router and splitter.

Seriously, most of the time it’s not the router and splitter, just wait for a few minutes, hours or days and it will come back magically, unless you’re able to convince the Customer Service Assistant to help you out!

Good luck!

      Are you really having b-r-o-a-d-band?

      Click this links to check

      What is Broadband? (http://www.broadband.co.uk/guide.jsp?section=1)

Connection speeds and download limits (http://www.broadband.co.uk/guide.jsp?section=3)

Is telephone cable the same as road highways?

      1. Roads during peak period will have traffic jams.

      2. However, telephone cables are similar to TNB cables.

      3. One electric cable from TNB is connected to a row of terrace houses.

      4. Bear in mind the usage of electricity is 24 hours per day in every house. Peak usage is during the night with TVs, airconds etc. Do you experience low voltage? Power surge perhaps.

      5. Is broadband usage 24 hours? Is every house using broadband?

      Therefore,

      1. I urge everyone to check whether you are getting the download speed that you subscribed from streamyx. For your info, you should get at least 90%.
      2. Please click this link to see how much speed you get. Click a few times to confirm. (http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/test_0150.asp)
      3. If you are getting below 50%, please do a print screen.
      4. To do a print screen, put your cursor at the down right hand corner (put the cursor at the time) to get the date and day appear. Once appear, press together the keyboard buttons ctrl and prt sc.
      5. Next click start, All Programs, Accessories, Paint
      6. Press keyboard buttons ctrl and v
      7. Then File, Save As (put a name) Save into your desktop
      8. Send it as attachment to amarjit.singh@cmc.gov.my, shaharliza@cmc.gov.my, mdshaani@fomca.org.my
      9. They need your support and evidence to bring up to TM
      10. Please support for everyone benefit

      @John
John, that’s some valuable pieces of information you provided.
Recently the Streamyx broadband is really below the “acceptable” speed for connections to overseas servers.
I am not even able to load the page : http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/test_0150.asp.
Is that the way they’re trying to counter complaints? By blocking complaints.. 😉
