SE Asia OpenSocial Application Contest Winner

February 17th, 2009

This is great news, and I promised that it will be revealed here if something good happens. And yes it did, and it’s real good.

My What Say U? Open Social application, which I have submitted to the SE Asia OpenSocial Application Contest is now displayed in the winners page.

The contest is actually an encouragement to developers in SouthEast Asia to venture into OpenSocial and to make applications on the platform. I’m not sure if it meets the expectation of the organizers but I personally think that either interests among developers here are not that high or those who are genuinely interested (like me) did not get to know much about it. There were talks and seminars like DevFest but the nearest was in Singapore!

Dear Google, can we have hackathon or talks in Malaysia too? And maybe a Google office as well? Heh..

I would only say that it’s my luck that I chanced upon the OpenSocial Contest and took time to make an application out of the OpenSocial tutorial, developer guide, references etc and managed to submit it in time for the contest.

Overall it was an experience, working on javascript and learning the OpenSocial APIs available online. It wasn’t really that difficult to build OpenSocial applications but it does involved a lot of my time for the application design, testing, and workaround for things that do not work. The coding was just a minor part of it.

The best part now is of course getting to know that I’ll be getting myself an Ipod Touch and Nintendo Wii from Google. What more can I ask for? 😉

The other Malaysian winner who made a cool OpenSocial application is Nazroll, which I think it wouldn’t be wrong for me to say he’s an ardent fan of skating. Way to go, Sk8ter boy!

Check out the application guide/details of the What Say U? application I developed.
